Southern Traditions, It’s Tradition Y’all!

It’s Tradition, Ya’ll!

Here in The South, southern traditions are very near and dear to any southern bride’s heart. It’s a way for us to keep in touch with our southern roots and perhaps remind us of what getting married in the south is all about. If you’re from these parts then you know how important it is to incorporate these southern traditions in our very own nuptials. And we just know if it was up to your Grandmother, she wouldn’t let you forget them. Here are a few of our favorites…

Burying the Bourbon
Worried about it raining on the big day? Southern tradition has it that by burying a bottle of bourbon upside down exactly one month before your wedding day and at the location of your ceremony, it will keep the rain away. Make sure this is one of your favorite bourbon’s because after the ceremony the bridal party digs up the bottle and celebrates by passing it around.

The Handkerchief
It was once thought that a bride’s tears would bring rain for the farmer’s crops or that a bride who shed tears would never cry over her marriage again. Handkerchiefs have been passed down from generation to generation and today are used as bouquet wraps, given to bridesmaids as gifts, and of course to dab away those happy tears.

Groom’s Cake
A groom’s cake is a gift from the bride to the groom that relates to something he loves. It typically is given at the rehearsal dinner but you will often see them at the reception, showcased for everyone to enjoy. This is the perfect opportunity to really honor the groom.

Weddings and monograms go hand-in-hand and we mean it when we say that every southern bride has waited her entire life for her monogram to change. It’s one of the most exciting things about becoming married other than getting to spend the rest of your life with the man you love most. Monograms today can be found EVERYWHERE and make a great gift for the lovely bride.

Cake Pulls
The Cake Pull, more common near New Orleans, comes from a Victorian tradition known as “ribbon pulling”. Charms with specific meanings are placed into the bottom layer of the cake with ribbons coming from them. Before the cake is cut, all the single women gather around to pull a charm, which reveals to them their good fortune.  If you don’t like the idea for your ceremony, cake pulls are perfect for a bridal shower or luncheon.

If you are a southern bride will you honor these southern traditions?

Mandi + Ryan | Shabby Chic Colorful Wedding at The Brawley House

There’s so much to love about planning weddings and events, particularly when you get the chance to work with amazing clients. Mandi and Ryan are one of the sweetest couples we’ve had the opportunity to work with. Their May 3rd shabby chic colorful wedding at the Brawley House was full of personal, touches, which captured their fun and creative personalities in an unforgettable way.

Mandi and Ryan’s dads were college roommates and fraternity brothers, but although their families had been friends for many years, they only met two years ago. On their one year anniversary Ryan popped the question with an intimate, at home proposal.

The couple gave guests a glimpse of their style with custom designed invitations and programs. Mandi is a graphic designer and took the delicate lace pattern from her gown and sketched the floral design herself. She and her sister hand painted all of the stationary for a colorful finishing touch.

Color continued to play a key role in Mandi and Ryan’s wedding day look. The ceremony was nestled in the home’s garden, with lush arrangements from Springvine Designs adding pops of pink and yellow to the ceremony arch. The bridesmaids wore a collection of dresses in vibrant hues, which were complemented by the varying shades of tulips, billy balls, peonies, and poppies. Abbi, the bride’s sister and maid of honor, also wore a necklace made of fresh flowers. It was a unique and stunning piece!

For the reception, each table featured a different look. Pieces of vintage lace were topped with mercury glass vases, letter Bs, candles, and an assortment of colorful arrangements from Springvine Designs. Guests were treated to a dessert table filled with handmade sweets from their family. The dessert table was complete with a collection of personal pictures on vintage shutters.

Mandi and Ryan made their grand exit under an archway of sparklers. Before guests left, they received favors of sweet potato, apple, and pumpkin butters.

We feel blessed to have been a part of such a personal and creative wedding, and we couldn’t wait to share these gorgeous images from Crystal Stokes Photography. Congratulations again Mandi and Ryan!
